I had to die to be alive again

last night, around 4 in the morning

I reached down to my feet

something was there that made me want to reach down

it started as a feeling in the shadow

as though something I lost was calling out to me

when I touched it I realized it was a hand

which reached out to take mine

in a firm grip without weight

I pulled it up but I could only see the hand

beyond that only shadow and darkness

I pulled the hand close to me

and found myself lying down

a whirlwind of blue and black unfolded

a shape and a shadow

connected to the hand

dissipated

swim with the world beneath you

the fading blue of the endless depths below

alien faces crafting their muted music whilst you greet them in silence

my skin turns red and I pass time smoking cheap Filipino cigarettes

yet it would not matter

if I were stranded on another planet

or crossing the bridge with that nervous feeling like it was the first time

it’s the worst illness to fall on

being so far for so long

like drips into earth and sky

with magnets for lips

splashes of polarity

so in candid street walks

and in smoky car shut ins

the shadows become faces

the faces all mine
